Menai Bridge v Llangefni 2nds Match report

Menai Bridge 34 - 12 Llangefni 2nds

The much anticipated return of rugby to Llyn Y Felin saw Bridge play host to local rivals Llangefni 2nd team, in this Anglesey derby match. Ironically this was the last home  fixture that we  played at the Bridge prior to the 2020 pandemic.

Both sides began brightly in a physical and competitive first twenty minutes, in which the damp conditions didn't help the handling on both sides. However Bridge won the territorial battle, but despite many sorties into the Llangefni 22 were unable to trouble the score board due to the visitors resolute defence.
Thirty minutes in a fantastic running line  from forward James Lillie saw him crash over the tryline from quick ruck ball from five metres out. Captain Dion MGrath converted to give Bridge a 7-0 lead. This didnt last long as the visitors registered an unconverted try to make the score 7-5 at half time.
The first score of the second half went to Bridge, after a fantastic break from centre Pat Roberts in which he cut through the visitors backline defence and then utilised his Inspector Gadget arm inorder to dot the ball over the whitewash.
Bridge then increased their lead further after a training ground move off lineout ball saw Gareth Parry force his way over the line. This led to astonishment on the sidelines as the try scorer hasn't been seen at training since 2019. Dion MGrath added the conversion, which was followed shortly by a penalty, to take his match haul to nine points.
Llangefni were next to score after many phases of concerted pressure they went over from a close range ruck, and also converted the try. This brought the score back to 24 - 12 in favour of the home side.
Bridge didn't concede again in the match, in fact they were to score two more unanswered tries. The first being from a well worked backline move after many forward oriented phases enabled the Bridge backs to utilise the space out wide for full back Daniel Hughes to race to the line.
The final try of the match came  just before  the full time whistle, Bridge winning their line out ball from ten metres out and a well executed driving maul saw prop Adam Goodwin marshal his pack over the line and thus dot the ball down himself.

Final Score Bridge 34 - 12 Llangefni.

At the end of the day it was fantastic to see rugby being played at the Bridge after such a long hiatus. Both teams were a credit to their clubs. Diolch Bois.
