Match report: Menai Bridge 16 – 13 (+1) Holyhead

Bridge bounce back to defeat Holyhead.

Bridge went into this match smarting from last week's loss whilst Holyhead were riding high on the back of a table climbing win. What a difference a week makes!

This was a ding dong derby match that thoroughly entertained the crowd. Bridge started well and raced to a 13 point to nil lead. Dion Mcgrath scored an early penalty and a 5 metre scrum saw Chris Roberts launch himself from number eight over the Holyhead line to score. McGrath slotted the conversion and another penalty to put daylight between Bridge and the opposition. Rhodri Parry clawed back a penalty for Holyhead on the half hour. It was soon followed by another McGrath penalty to take the score to 16 -3. Holyhead were enjoying a good period of possession and territory, and were rewarded with a try for winger Endaf Jones, the conversion going wide. At half time the score stood at 16 - 8.

Holyhead were well and truly back in the match and after twenty minutes of play, fly half Rhodri Parry powered over the line. The conversion was missed and the score stood at 16-13. Bridge were awarded a couple of penalties, however they could not extend their lead as the shots edged wide. Both teams battled to the end, Holyhead searching for a score and Bridge stoutly defending their slender lead. As the clock ticked down Bridge were camped in their own 22 and chose to count the clock down playing a number of short forward pick and drives. The risky strategy worked and much to the relief of the home crowd Mr Jolley blew for time with a final score of 16 -13.

Bridge travel to Flint next week, where they expect another stern test.
