Match report: Holyhead 10 - 14 Menai Bridge

This was a very tight derby match, that was a credit to both teams for their attacking ambitions and their dogged defences.

Bridge took an early lead, when a kick into midfield from Holyhead was gathered in the centre and the ball fed to supporting scrum half Ed Williams. Williams showed good pace and strength to finish off the play with a try, which went unconverted. Bridge extended their lead with a Dion McGrath penalty that was well struck from the 10 metre line. Play was evenly balanced for the remainder of the half and Holyhead struck back with a Robin Cox penalty, for a closing score of 3-8.

After the interval, the Holyhead forwards managed to break out from a maul near the halfway line and exploited the blindside, with Meirion Evans racing in for a try. The conversion took Holyhead into the lead at 10-8. The lead was short lived as a further McGrath penalty edged Bridge into a one point advantage. Holyhead sustained the pressure and were rewarded with two penalties. Unfortunately for them neither was converted and Bridge held on to their slender lead. Bridge then enjoyed some territorial advantage and were rewarded with a penalty. McGrath slotted it over for the closing score of the game, giving Bridge a  critical 4 point lead. Despite Holyhead's best efforts they were unable to breach the Bridge defence and as the game came to a close, Bridge were able to exit and close down the clock for a fine away win.

Bridge end their season with a home match against Pwllheli 2nds next Saturday.
