Bala 2nds 17- 20 Menai Bridge (Gwynedd Cup)

Bridge booked a Gwynedd Cup semi final slot, having negotiated a tricky away tie at Bala. They can now look forward to an Anglesey derby at Holyhead.

The match was a contrast in styles, Bala looked to play a driving forwards game, whilst Bridge attempted to move the ball to their three-quarters.

Bala scored first through Alwyn Jones who split the defence with a strong direct run. Bridge could have closed the gap with a penalty that McGrath edged just wide, however centre Dave Williams came to the rescue once again, outpacing the home defence for a 5 pointer that levelled the scores. Bala indiscipline resulted in another penalty that McGrath converted for a half time lead of 3 points for Bridge.

The second half started brightly for Bridge, who were managing to find gaps in the Bala back line. Dion McGrath raced through for his try, which he converted to take the score to 5-15. Although Bala were enjoying good possession, they were unable to convert it into points. Sam Williams then finished off a great passage of support and passing play with a try to extend the lead. Bala responded by making a series of tactical substitutions that strengthened their hand. Eventually the pressure told and Bridge conceded a try by Iwan Morris to close the gap. Further powerful forward drives led to an Emrys Roberts try that was converted by Llion Jones. With two minutes to go, Bala had their tails up and looked likely to snatch a late victory. Clinging to a slender 3 point lead, Bridge spent the remainder of the game defending on their try line. Ultimately their defence held out, despite the relentless waves of attacks from Bala. The final whistle brought relief to Bridge and frustration for Bala.
