Match report: Menai Bridge 13 - 12 Pwllheli 2nds

Bridge took the spoils by the narrowest of margins, defeating table topping Pwllheli in the closing phases of the match.

This was a very tight match, with both teams struggling to score against solid defences. It wasn't until the half hour that the first points came to Bridge, thanks to a Dion McGrath penalty. Just before half time Bridge conceded a try, with full back Gethin Jones ghosted through the home defence for the touch down. Alan Jones converted for a half time score of 7 to 3 for the visitors.

Bridge started the second half with a purpose. A series of forward charges on the Pwllheli try line were rewarded with a try for Bridge Captain Ollie O'Brien who powered over the line for the score. McGrath converted to give Bridge a lead of 10 - 7. Pwllheli responded with a similar forward try. Capitalising on a close range line out  followed by a number of forward phases, Pwllheli number 8 Wil Piper crossed the line for his try. The missed conversion left the score at 10 to 12 and crucially Bridge were within a penalty of the lead. Having worked their way into the Pwllheli half, Bridge were awarded a penalty from near the half way but McGrath's effort fell just short. The miss spurred the home side on and an attacking play was rewarded with a further penalty in the 22 for hands in the ruck. McGrath duly slotted the ball over for a one point lead of 13 -12. Bridge reclaimed  the ball from the restart and happily managed  the ball over the touchline for the end of the match, to the relief and delight of the home crowd.

After two league defeats, Bridge will be delighted to get their campaign back on track and look forward to next week's home game against Rhos.
