Menai Bridge 9 - 18 Rhyl & District

Although the score suggested a close match, Rhyl deservedly came away with the points scoring three tries. Bridge could only respond through the trusty boot of fly half Dion McGrath, who slotted three penalties.

Rhyl were ahead for the whole game, opening the scoring with a penalty which was followed by an excellent try scored by their lively outside centre who split the home defence on the halfway and raced in wide. Bridge then clawed their way back into the match, taking the score to 6-8. With half time looming Rhyl won a scrum on half way against the head, used the turnover ball quickly to outflank the scrambling home defence to extend the lead to 6-13.

Inevitably the first score of the second half was another Bridge penalty scored by McGrath. With the score narrowed to 4 points, the next try was crucial to the outcome of the match. Despite their best efforts Bridge could not convert pressure into points. Rhyl on the other hand pounced on a home error and their right wing motored in at speed.

This was the final score of the match. Bizarrely Bridge shunned the opportunity to take a penalty in front of the posts at the death, which could have given them a losing bonus point. Clearly the lure of the white line triumphed over tactical awareness!
